The packaging on this set is super nice. Two high-gloss, thick gatefolds contained within a high-gloss lift-top box. Very nice. The pressing is also very high quality. Thick vinyl, inside black polylined inner sleeves, plays dead quiet, flat, centered, absolutely no surface noise, clicks or pops. Really smooth playback. That being said, when it comes to the sound, I prefer earlier versions of this album. While the clarity is excellent on this version, each instrument comes through super clear, I feel like the sound is a bit too cleaned up. It lacks some of the original analog warmth and rawness that my Japanese EAS version from the 70s has. While the sound is very big on this new version, the drums especially hit hard, I feel the sound overall loses some richness. I wouldn't call it thin, as the mix is balanced well and full sounding, it's just a little less saturated (the bass is big too but it sounds less defined). While this version doesn't sound bad at all, it's definitely a different listening experience than early stereo versions. It's a little to clean for my taste as I prefer the unsettling urgency and grittiness of the earlier versions.

For me, this set just plain sounds mind-blowingly good. One of my favorite albums, put out in a great set, with a new mix that just sounds...right. That’s the word. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

I was listening to this and my mam came into the room and she swore blind that Paul McCartney's contributions are higher up in the mix than on her original mono copy (0000447), along with Ringo's workman-like drumming. Can anyone confirm this is true as my mam is convinced that Macca and "Him off Thomas the Tank Engine" (as she insists on calling Ringo, her least favoured member of the fab four) are trying to further aggrandize their legacy, and probably cream off a few extra million in royalties for themselves.

This new mix sounds really nice and clear, plus it combines some of the good sides of the original stereo mix with some of the good sides of the mono mix. Overall, everything sounds crystal clear, and instruments and voices are much more distinguishable (e.g. buried vocals at the end of track 1 etc etc).
I very much like the original mix though, which I think is pretty good, compared to many other Beatles stereo mixes, and of course because I grew up with it.

Downsides:
- some of the slips that George Martin did on the stereo mix were actually reproduced here, which is beyond my comprehension. (e.g. in "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", the last bit of Lennon's word "down" during the first run through of "I need a fix..." which was left instrumental on the final version is STILL there at 0:56. This mistake was not present on the original mono mix.)

- Why give us the much-bootlegged esher demos as vinyl bonus discs 3+4 when the alternate takes from the Super Deluxe version are much more exciting to the casual Beatle freak (which the 4LP-set still is mainly adressed to, let's face it...)
(well OK, the demos on here are better quality, and some alternates, but still...)
Here is an excellent analysis: http://wogew.blogspot.com/2018/10/the-beatles-white-album-super-deluxe.html

Managed to get this for around £60 inc. shipping in the end via an Alibris seller "Oldies". This site frequently offers discounts, and I've reliably scored the expensive box sets far cheaper through them—as I did in this case. It takes about three weeks to ship from the US, but worth it if you're in no rush. Another good source is Rarewaves on eBay, who nearly always seem to be cheaper than anyone on new releases.

Surprising that there hasn't been much pushback over the price of the vinyl edition of this. £15 (or less) for the CD with Esher Demos vs. £89 for the vinyl? That's crazy. Ok, it's 4 records, but that doesn't account for the vast disparity. Last year for Sgt. Pepper I got the double vinyl for around £25 (shopping around), and the CD was, again, about £15. Even as an diehard fan, I find this pricing is eye-watering, and a complete gouge. I am sitting tight for the inevitable Black Friday deal, where it'll no doubt be closer to £60, which is what it should have been in the first place.

Does anyone know if this was cut to lacquer using a pure analog chain? Analog source is awesome but curious if Abbey Road has analog preview signal capability or do they convert to digital for the delay before cutting lacquer.
