Although I'm a fan of the Beloved's earlier work, X remains my favourite album of theirs. It's probably dated the most too, but I really couldn't care less. Behind the major-chord epic house riff of Satellite and the cod-gospel vocals of Ease The Pressure (the only two chart singles from this album) lies many evocative grooves and deeper lyrics than your average Sasha remix. Yes this is the group's last album and yes it hasn't stood the test of time, but there have been numerous occasions when A Dream Within A Dream has moved me to tears. The beauty of such poignant, heavenly chords and Jon Marsh's distinctive voice make a perfect combination, and even when the latter doesn't appear (Crystal Wave) it still works.

As the previous reviewer says, it would have been lovely to hear more from the Beloved in their deeper, more melancholy phase. For those who want more, I'd recommend listening to the Beloved remix of Angelpie's She; a beautiful slice of ambient house with a slinky groove.

I generally don't care for house music. X however, I find very appealing.

Even though the structure is mostly typical pop (except Crystal Wave, an instrumental DJ journey), I find the sound very original and distinct. The lyrics are sentimental but somehow not sappy or annoying. Instead there is a sense of sincerity I credit to Jon's mellow, unforced vocal style. X is a notch darker than other Beloved albums.

The atmospheric backdrop contributes immensely to each song. It makes me wish Jon Marsh would release an ambient album. Production quality is tops. It is enjoyable on any system, but the listening experience played loud through quality speakers justifies a substantial hi-fi budget.

After more than a decade, I find X a durable favorite, enjoyable from start to finish.
