Well I'll stick in my view... Since it all seems negative!
This is a great release... Hippy as fuck looking, and totally fitting with the style of the band... Mine sounds great! Odd bit of cackle, but most new pressings or coloured fancy ones do! Is it a boot, or is it not!?! 🤔... I've got worse sounding official ones!

Released and remastered on three vinyl albums, one Crayola crayon red, one yellow and one blue, there’s but a single thing that sweeps through my mind as I hold this collection, and that’s the cameo Beta Band’s EP (the EP, not the band) made in the movie High Fidelity, where John Cusack was determined to see how many of the The Three EP’s he could sell simply by playing the darkly dreamy and haunting track “Dry the Rain” in his record shoppe. And yes, I immediately found my way to my local record shoppe and scored a copy, where to my sincere disappointment, none of the other tracks were anything remotely like that glorious single, as if it were all some sort of cosmic joke directly played by the vinyl gods at my expense. But more on that later.

The newly remastered collection draws together the actual three EPs for a 20th anniversary reissue. There are no changes to the afore mentioned albums, no additional material, no outtakes or alternate versions of any of the songs. That said, the Beta Band were nearly unrecognizable when smacked up against what was happening the the 90’s, something I failed to appreciate then and still do to this very day. Sadly for me, the Beta Band offered no comprehensive vision or a cohesive experience. Everything was so different, that the only similarities I heard was the dissimilar-ness.

Many listeners rate the Beta Band rather highly, though methinks it’s all a wash of pseudo manufactured ’look at me, I’m so intelligent’ nonsense … sort of like your friend who insists on playing Sparks albums when you come over, where you’re left feeling that it’s more of a lecture than a fun visit and cool listen, leaving me to bet my bottom dollar that none of those Sparks albums will be played ’til a return visit, and then, the fear of hearing Sparks or the Beta Band is foremost in my thoughts when considering that visit, leaving me to invite him over to my house instead, but again, the vinyl gods swat me like some cat toy, as the guy shows up with Sparks albums tucked under his arm and this set of records as a gift, records I’ll never play and can never sell, for fear my disloyalty will be discovered. And if that’s not enough, I have to sit there with these records spinning on my turntable, with him informing me that the records are playful, a boundless odyssey of psychedelic imagination, where the band is under no illusions regarding conforming to anything other than their own delusional sense of off beat adventure. These albums come across like your kid’s drawings, worthy of be taped to the refrigerator and smiled at, though nothing more; which of course now has me wondering if I might do the same here, tape ‘em on the fridge for a quick smile and instantly forgotten as soon as I shut the door.

These records have a very do it yourself feel, suggesting that the ideas and concepts inspired far outweigh the finished product, all leaving me to feel that anyone with a bedroom and a computer can have a following. Well, if you happen to be a fan, then you’re future’s so bright your gonna have to wear shades, because all of the Beta Band material is going to be remastered and reissued, though the other releases may see some changes, along with additional material.

For now, this assemblage is tucked away in the back of my closet, where it will dutifully be brought out just before my wayfaring friend knocks on my door again.

*** The Fun Facts: The cover art includes image of all three of the EP’s.

Beta: Second in position in the structure of an organic molecule from a particular group of atoms. Also: A stage of development in which a product is nearly complete but not yet ready to be released.

What does it mean to be beta? A beta orbiter is someone, especially a male, who invests time and effort into mingling with others in the hope of eventually getting into a romantic relationship or acquiring sex. The term can be used interchangeably with the terms involuntary celibate or incel.

The reality of the situation regarding the band's name is this: Lead singer Stephen Mason worked for a video production house in the duplication department, responsible for manufacturing beta video copies. At the time he thought this would be his dream job, though one night while working late he fell asleep waiting for a dub to finish and the cigarette he was not supposed to be not smoking causing a pile of beta tapes to burst into flame. One of the volunteer firefighters who arrived on the scene was drummer Robin Jones. Strangely enough, he was looking for a lead singer to which the band was born. When looking for a name they considered the Alpha Band, but thought that sounded pretentious, then remembering the beta tape incident that initially brought them together, the name Beta Band was a no brainer.

The sound of this pressing is amazing. Very controlled dynamics and stereo separation. I am not too surprised though. Someone was playing it at my local record store and when I told them it was good, they replied with 'I know.' Cheeky bastard.

Can anybody tell me what "reproduction of The Flower Press" is? I just came across that note and searched through all sleeves in the box but as far as I can tell there is only the CD as additional part. It's #3945, so I'd guess it's the limited version.

This is a superb reissue, nicely pressed and sounds quality is nothing short of incredible. It's times like this I remember why I choose vinyl. Highly recommended.

This sounds very good, cut with a lot of bass - not sure if this is what causes quite a bit of skipping during 'The House Song' on my copy as there are no visible defects and I have a decent arm and cartridge which normally don't have these issues.

Great pressing, the sound is crisp with no background hiss. However the vinyl doesn't look like that in the pics. There is no glitter within the wax

The sound is absolutely immaculate. Remastering is excellent. Packaging leaves something to be desired, but the vinyl is the star of the show, and it shines here.

I have a skip on B + A, though the record looks just fine.
Oof, considering there is a 2LP release on the way, maybe I should send it back.
Only got it, because I was given a 50€ gift card, otherwise I would never have payed so much for it. Decisions, decisions...
