If 1966's Fifth Dimension is The Byrds' Revolver, then the follow-up, 1967's Younger Than Yesterday, is their Sgt. Pepper. While tunes like "Eight Miles High" were the group's entry point into psychedelic rock, YTY is a full-blown head trip. "C.T.A. - 102" is a song about alien life, replete with spacy electronic effects. Reverse tapes add a disorienting feel to the dreamy "Thoughts and Words" and the Eastern-influenced "Mind Gardens," and trippy lyrics abound throughout the album. Cuts such as the country-rocker "Time Between" and the harmony-heavy Dylan cover "My Back Pages," however, maintain the band in touch with their rootsy side.

This is (usually) my favorite Byrds album, and also probably my favorite album of the psychedelic era. A perfect blend of the psychedelic rock of "Fifth Dimension", and the countryfried rock that followed on "Sweetheart of the Rodeo." The song selections and playing/instrumentation are more varied than most other albums of the era--A start to finish listen takes one on a journey from pop ("Have You Seen Her Face"), melancholia ("Everybody's Been Burned"), through meditative soundscapes ("Mind Gardens"), and circles back around ("My Back Pages"). A wholly American psychedelia, and in my opinion the apex of their discography.

Although I don't have a vinyl collection anymore. The re-mastered CD is a favorite in my car when I go out on sales calls.
Just a great collection.....................................
