Over the oh' so many years this album has ALWAYS "stuck-it!" to whatever I follow it up behind. Truly a milestone in electronica/experimental.. If you do not own this one (1) album you are missing on a greatly unique & sublime album from THE FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON or this era/genre/place of being of music & sound ...

I remember "We Have Explosive" being played in the mighty game "WipEout 2097". It wasn't my favorite track out there but I admit that it was perfectly fitted with the game's atmosphere.

The album "Dead Cities", though, is very different. Dark, industrial but far more experimental and less rhythmic. The whole is also more emotional, with beauty, sadness and obscurity very well matched.

I would posit this album between the dynamism of The Chemical Brothers and the eclectism of Aphex Twin.

For those who don't research music through radio, TV, Beatport, ITunes or Deezer, check this out. It's a real musical trip on its own.

This album is so unique in it's own dystopian sort of way. When you listen to it you almost feel as if you're the only one alive on earth at times. Industrial is brought in which gives it a very dark and brooding atmosphere which is in total contrast to their first album Accelerator which made you "feel good". I can describe this as Cyberpunk. Would be great in a movie like Blade Runner or The Matrix.

"Max" is a track that stops the doom and gloom and gives you 3 minutes of pure peace. Almost as if you're sailing on an endless river.

We Have Explosive is an amazing single. Clever manipulation of sounds and so hard-hitting. This is the one on the album that you should blast at full volume.

This is their best album by far. This album is the one that got me into the band along with "Papua New Guinea".

The artwork is spooky and phenomenal as well. So weird and quirky and unique.

Quagmire / In A State Of Permanent Abyss.
What a fantastic use these producers make of the drums and percussion from Heads,Hands and Feet by Santana (The MoonFlower lp) ....
Some of my fave live drumming of all time is on that lp but to then have it expertly reprogrammed into a wicked slice of breakbeat is just so so good!
As for the rest of the lp...
Well I'm still digesting it!...
I cannot believe I have slept on this plus other lps by FSOL.
Never again!
Peace ;)

One of my favourite FSOL album with "Accelerator" and "Lifeforms". Probably their "darkest" release with "ISDN". It's the starting point to enter the wide universe of FSOL, but it gives a good idea of the range of exploration made by this duo. Their recent stuff like "Archived" and "Environment" series are not as accessible as this album.
Dead Cities is the most famous FSOL release because of the two titles ("Herd Killing" & "We Have Explosive") used in the WipeOut 2 soundtrack. This driving me to the big question about this album :
Why "Landmass" title is not present in Dead Cities tracklist (and in any other FSOL release) ???
I suppose this track has just been made for WipeOut 2 and FSOL gave all rights to Sony. With "Landmass", Dead Cities could have been a complete masterpiece, too bad...

Accelerator caught my attention, Lifeforms was good, ISDN different (and better) but Dead Cities was superb (and imo FSOL at their best). A smorgasbord of genres.... funk, groovy, ambient, hip hop, thought inspiring.... a wonderful record.

It also made me realise everyone in the world is doing something without me!

I've grown up with FSOL since the early 90's, and I can say this is their most complete album from start to finish. What I mean by "complete' is that as an album it stands on it's own, the way songs ebb and flow into and out of each other to the types of songs. From the very aggressive to the tender and heartfelt songs that make a person question their own existence, this album is one of the pinnacles of electronic music.
