After a 10+ year hiatus, The Grid finally returns with DOPPELGANGER, which sees them moving away from their catching tech-pop for more pure techno. "8 Miles from Memphis" hints a little at their huge hit "Swamp Thing," with a country-gospel feel amongst the rough electronics. "Vibration" wobbles accordingly, but I'm struck overall at how "old school" the album feels, as if The Grid hasn't noticed all the changes that's happened to the genre in their absence. So despite the glistening groove of "Pure Statik," the album somehow sounds dated. "Mighty Heroik" and "Saturday" take the tempo down some, and "Closer" is so pretty that if you don't start smiling, you're dead. The beats come back with a vengeance in "Three Floors Above You," but "Fools Rush In" and "Be Here With You" float back out on a mellow note. Sounding behind the times isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you have to hand it to the Grid boys for sticking to their guns.
