An odd 1981 non LP single, at the time it felt like a step backwards but, seen in context, 'Absolute Beginners' was a throw forward to The Style Council and 'The Gift'. An essential Jam single: 'Tales from the Riverbank' is a sinister downbeat listen akin to The Cure or Siouxsie; 'Absolute Beginners' utilises soul horns and sounds fabulous. Terrific from Weller.

Initial copies were issued with a glossy picture / lyric insert, often having silver paint from the label on.
