This is one crude, sexy record. I was always amused at how "Work With Me Annie" somehow was censored into "Dance With Me Henry". Yes, these were the good old days when you just couldn't say "fuck".
"Annie Had a Baby" enters dangerous territory for the fifties simply because it brings up pregnancy and hints at copulation. I remember playing this for some screwed-up girlfriend I was going with years ago, and she was really offended by the singer's obvious jealousy over the newborn child. "She has to sing to the baby instead of me...." That only made me like the song even more! And like the girlfriend a lot less!
You have to understand, this song was released back in the days when it was a really big deal to show Lucy pregnant on the "I Love Lucy" TV show.
Personally, I found Chubby Checker's "twist" craze fairly silly. He couldn't say "fuck", so he had to say "come on baby let's do the twist". However, nowadays, since every other song that is released contains at least one "fuck", I miss the innocent fifties. But how to become a virgin again? You can't. Reminds me of the old Groucho Marx line about Doris Day: "I remember her before she was a virgin".
At any rate, "Annie Had a Baby" offers titillating thrills to this day!
