Not quite as incendiary as they could be live, but still pretty gosh-darned coruscating and, er, heavy.

One of the high-water marks of uk post-punk from the golden age. The Pop Group forged a rare and beautiful amalgam of punk, funk, dub, free noise and art-pop, possibly only exceeded in quality by The Homosexuals or (early) Chrome (but they were US). Amazing to think they were still in their teens when they cut this masterpiece. Appointing the reggae/ dub genius Dennis Bovelle as producer was an absolute master-stroke - sending an already fabulously visionary sound into completely hitherto uncharted sonic territory.
The upbeat funk monsters Thief Of Fire and We Are Time still sound ahead of the game - but its the uncanny avant-ballads like Snowgirl and Savage Sea that now sound like the future. A future from 1979 that we never got to hear. Nobody - not even The Pop Group could follow this one up (the 2nd album isn't so good imo).
The cd version of Y adds the essential single She Is Beyond Good and Evil with its avant-dub b-side 3'38". I hesitate to end on a negative note - but I mark the Pop Group down very slightly due to the employment of some very dodgy lyrics; "soldiers march through your eyes" or "like a dancing flame on a bed of nails" indeed.

The Best Record of period Post Punk, no discussion. 5 Stars for Pop Group. Absolutely classic.
