The extended version of "Miss You" is over 8 minutes long and called the "Special Disco Version". It was released as the band's first dance remix on a 12-inch single. "Miss You" became The Rolling Stones' eighth and final number one hit in the United States on its initial release in 1978. It also reached number three in the United Kingdom. The song was originally nearly nine minutes long, but was edited to nearly five minutes for the album version, and to three-and-a-half minutes for the radio single.

This is one of those records that became significant for the wide, mainstream acceptance of disco, even though particularly Mick Jagger wasn't happy with the disco tag the song ultimately received. According to him (in liner notes of "Jump Back"), "the song 'Miss you' was never meant as a disco song at all; that harmonica isn't exactly disco, right?"
Nevertheless, the popularity of disco way back in 1978 caused the song to become a massive hit, No. 1 in the US, No. 2 in the Netherlands and No. 3 in the UK.

It was also one of the first attempts of a mainstream pop/rock band doing a 12" remix (albeit a re-edit rather than a remix), a job that was done by Bob Clearmountain. It received great club play, bringing the band to an audience who'd never expect to hear them in a club. In many ways, this version was a guideline for a lot of other successful attempts of 12" mixes and long disco songs made by pop/rock artists in the 70s (Rod Stewart, Mother's Finest, Blondie, Roxy Music, Kiss, Cliff Richard), a phenomenon that truly exploded in the decade thereafter.
