I don't like splatter or multi-coloured vinyl either. Fortunately, my copy sounds really quiet, which surprises me. I don't hear any background noise at all. The music itself, however, while sounding very clean, does sound a bit flat and lifeless. My original UK first release sounds far more punchy and has much better dynamics. The bass has more grunt and the high frequencies are much clearer with no roll off at all. Get a good original copy, it sounds much better.

I bought this as a gold-stamped promo and this master and pressing sounds pretty darn great to me! This is the tracklist I heard first and for many years so it's my favorite version.

I bought this and then sold it along with all of my other "splatter" and heavily marbled records (i.e. Nektar's "Recycled" splatter and Supertramp's marbled "Breakfast in America.") Call me crazy. but I can hear an irregular "heartbeat" in quiet passages when the stylus passes over the different densities of the splatter or marble. Very annoying to me.

What an album, up there in my top 10. Shame it's not better known. This is my favourite version, with 'Science' and 'Submarines' added to the tracklist.
Oh yes, anyone who has this particular version on vinyl care to share their thoughts? I have two of this pressing and She Blinded me with Science sounds good but a bit harsh in some areas, especially the loudest instrumentals/vocals. It's not at all overpowering but I notice it on headphones. I'd put it down to wear but the exact same issue is on two LPs. I have a German pressing which plays without an issue.

A clean, quiet pressing. This version of the album includes "Leipzig", "Urges", the full-length demo of "Airwaves", and the rock-styled B-side version of "Radio Silence".
Every version of this album is grand, even if it doesn't have the smash hit "She Blinded Me with Science" or the sublime "One of Our Submarines" tacked on.

He plays the saxophone solo on closing track "Cloudburst At Shingle Street"
Greg Ham is playin' the saxophone fades out and final track.

This CD (EMI – 50999 2 67915 2 4, EMI – 2679 152; the version with 19 tracks and a DVD) is mastered slightly faster than some of the original pressings (such as EMI – CDP 7 46009 2, printed in West Germany). When comparing the two, matched to sample-accuracy at the beginning, most of the songs on this version are about two beats ahead by the end.
Anyone know which version is at the right speed?

Probably the easiest way in the US at the moment to get a copy on LP with what I consider to be the best tracklist - it’s definitely the 2009 deluxe edition master (which is dynamic and very clean, but a bit sterile) and you won’t find much analog magic here, but it does get the job done of listening to the album the way it should be heard. Very quiet pressing in terms of surface noise, though the bright-leaning EQ of the source master does result in some sibilence
