Now on my second copy of this LP. But I seem to hear lots of pops and clicks. I’d say it is possible static on quieter moments. Can’t seem to get rid of those pops and clicks so it’s not optimal... however I also own Native Invader and have the same issue with it.

I think the audio sounds better for both albums on vinyl but it it’s still not perfect. Sad the CDs for both had to be so LOUD sand harsh.

Considering this recording was commissioned by one of the oldest extant classical labels in the world, I suppose it's no surprise that it sounds particularly well on vinyl. The sound is rich, clean and well balanced. For a singer prone to sibilance, there is no vocal distortion, nor is their evidence of excessive deessing and the textures of her voice are well represented. The piano is clear but never too bright, bass heavy or overly reverberant. The chamber orchestra is remarkably well represented. This easily the most beautifully produced of all the Tori Amos albums. The same can be said of the gatefold and inner sleeves. The printing is sharp and rich, the materials of exceptional quality. I own all of Tori Amos' LP vinyl releases and on every level, Night of Hunters is exceptional.

Approached by Dr. Alexander Buhr of renowned label 'Deutsche Grammophon' to compose a song cycle based on classical works, Tori Amos embarks on possibly the most ambitious LP of her career. Night of Hunters is a story of a relationship in utter turmoil, explored through a fantastical world of elemental beings, shape-shifting spirits, historical references and Celtic legend.

On first listen I found it rather overwhelming with its mythological imagery and grandiose emotional swells. The experience is extremely theatrical in nature, notably devoid of discernible hooks and I dare say that many would be repelled by its apparent pretensions.
But, with repeated listens the layers peel away revealing a poetically immersive and melodically descriptive landscape. It is not hard to see the influence that fantasy writer and friend Neil Gaiman has had on Tori over the years and I can easily imagine her bouncing ideas with him during the writing process.

Working adeptly with the classical source material, Amos stirs in various influences from more socially relevant genres without over contemporising the themes. In doing so, she creates a work that is both respectful as well as daring. Her supporting octet of string and woodwind, led by frequent collaborator John Philip Shenale provide the accompaniment to her usual Bosendorfer and vocal stylings. The instrumental arrangements and performances seem befitting a label with such global esteem as Deutsche Grammophon.
Tori's vocal delivery displays her usual range of power and delicacy, yet seems a little professionally distant and restrained in passion compared to her more formative works. Unlike many of her previous albums, hers is not the only voice on the record. I admit to grimacing at the idea of Tori bringing her pre-pubescent offspring Natashya into the project. Thankfully, she delivers a performance which is surprisingly mature, but also portrays a sense of innocence and timeless truth that only a child can provide. The combination works well for the character of Anabelle, a timeless spirit who appears to guide Tori through her psychological turmoil. Incidentally, I found that despite its slightly cringe-worthy title, the song 'Cactus Practice' amused me greatly, picturing the scene in the studio where Mum is being invited by her child to consume Peyote in order to unravel hidden truths. Certainly not something I recall from my own childhood!

I feel this is very early days in my relationship with this album and there are still moments that I find a little overblown and oppressive. However, the experience has been increasingly rewarding.
In today's rapid and vapid culture of consumption, Night of Hunters offers a refreshingly bold concept which requires considerable investment, yet yields a treasure trove of depth I believe will last for generations to come.
