The press in the late 70’s and early 80’s never really took to Gary Numan, in fact, they bloody well hated him. It’s difficult to be sure quite why they did, but he was so vilified that they didn’t seem to rest until they had indoctrinated the record buying public into believing that it was actually wrong to like him, wrong to like his music, and, eventually, when he was at his lowest commercial and creative ebb, they ignored him. In many ways, this was worse as, in their opinion, he was not doing anything that was even worthy of comment. It was their vilification that was partially responsible for the reduction in quality of his output, they got what they wanted.

It is not unfair to say that ‘Middle Period’ Numan is at very best, patchy, although Numan himself is rather more scathing about his own releases from this period. I remember a guy in Didcot, when I was nearing the end of my school life, who was a Numanoid. He wore make up and a Numanesque boiler suit, he really did look a total dick. Despite this, it was good that he had his own thing, sort of. So many of us at that time were somewhat lacking in identity, drifting from one thing to the other whilst trying to like the same things as our friends liked. It took guts to walk through the park past a group of lads who were laughing at him in his ridiculous clothes (and they were ridiculous, in that setting), so fair play to him.

Obviously this has ‘Are Friends Electric?’, the breakthrough song and the one, along with ‘Cars’ that is most often referenced and best remembered, but this is not one of those albums that has the big hit and a load of filler.

The two other stand out tracks for me are the opener, ‘Me! I Disconnect from You’ and, with what must surely be some of the darkest lyrics of the time, ‘Down in the Park’:

Down in the park where the machmen meet
The machines are playing ‘Kill-by-numbers’
Down in the park with a friend called ‘Five’

I was in a car crash or was it the war?
Well, I’ve never been quite the same
Little white lies like I was there

Come to Zom-Zom’s, a place to eat
Like it was built in one day
You can watch the humans try to run

Oh, look, there’s a rape machine
I’d go outside if it looks the other way
You wouldn’t believe the things they do

Down in the park where the chant is death, death, death
Until’ the sun cries mornin’
Down in the park with friends of mine

We are not lovers, we are not romantics
We are here to serve you
A different face but the words never change

Apparently Numan took short stories that he had written and turned them into songs, or based songs on them. Which is where this one came from and explains the theme of the album as a whole.

All the other tracks stand up in their own right and create a really solid album where everything has its place and is in it’s place. By design or accident it is a fabulously constructed album, which could even be considered one of the dreaded ‘concept’ albums, and part of this concept is the coldness of it, the distance and the space, perhaps the sense that the narrator in the songs is always outside looking in.

I’ve rambled on enough, have a listen.

I can't say so much about this release as Crijevo, except that it's Numan plagiarizing in reverse - that is - I get the feeling that he ripped off his own melodies on later releases as just Gary Numan, not The Tubeway Army. I noticed this as I was listening to Track 1, Me, I Disconnect From You, which sounded rather not so distantly similar to his own I Die: You Die. But none of that really matters when an artist rips off himself. My favorite track, and to me the standout on the album, is Are 'Friends' Electric?. The underlying synthesizer really makes the track come alive. Of course I never really could say that Mr. Numan is a standout vocalist, nor is he a great optimist - his lyrics are dark and rather pessimistic, but sometimes that's what makes a project work. Could you imagine any Gary Numan album with bouncy, poppy vocals? Eeeee! That would be terrible!

Gary Numan takes inspiration in equal parts from Philip K Dick and William Burroughs on this landmark sonic distopia. This record explores themes of alienation and isolation with lyrics far beyond the teenage angst that riddled like music then and now.
"Replicas" is replete with well-crafted and catchy pop songs that anticipated the "Bladerunner" future years before that movie was released.
The single "Down in the Park" was used in the soundtrack to the punk film "Times Square", released in 1980.
"Replicas" is a seminal work by a pioneering artist still making music today.

'Replicas' was one of my obsessions, the album so naive that I liked every bit of its alien-concept. Although it's calculating and instant. Numan learned from it's instancy as a safe recipe to continue a successive run of albums and singles later on. The rumour has it there were The Human League but sadly less opportunities for them to take the throne so many debates occured whether who really made that first synth-blip in the wake of post-punk mainstream. And Numan certainly made it commercially appealing to a wider audience switching his earlier Punk-influences for sudden Kraftwerk/John Foxx gadgetry. Although everyone cites 'Replicas' as electronic, it's guitars, drums and bass that do their fair share of electrifying collage with the synth as a driving force but not the dominating one ('The Machman', 'You Are In My Vision', 'Replicas' and the ironic 'When the Machines Rock') - except for the last piece on the record, the instrumental 'I Nearly Married a Human', as fairly odd, pleasant tune with ambiental drones. But it's still more like a replica of Bowie/Eno/Ultravox than any particular synthetic form that the early Human League, OMD, Dalek I, Yello or Vice Versa already established as far more strict in the wake of avant garde/post-modernism. Numan had a very easy job to watch and learn from these groups and then picking the right moment to jump in and steal their thunder. However the curse of 'Replicas' proved him a potential plagiarist as later albums 'The Pleasure Principle', 'Telekon', 'Dance', 'I Assassin', and 'Warriors' don't contain any particular moves from instant stop-start synth melodies packed with pretentious lyrics and conventional instruments, wrapped up in Numan's annoying alien-esque vocals. I still do like 'Replicas' only my perception of it differs from once-momentary fascinations with tunes like 'Are 'Friends' Electric?'... 'It Must Have Been Years' - actually 24 now. And Gary Numan made another switch - he learns from the apocalypse of Marilyn Manson as there are new cliches happening. It wouldn't be surprising if he releases 'Replicas II' or something. Before that happens, 'Me! I Disconnect From You', Gary.
