Tunng introduced their own take on folk-tronica with MOTHER'S DAUGHTER AND OTHER SONGS, starting with the gentle strums, rattling percussive elements, and altered voice of the title track before it clarifies into classic vocal harmonics. Meanwhile, the guitar riff on "People Folk" accompanies a steady, slow click track before the vocals undergo a slight alteration, while the plucking on "Tale of Black" makes it sound like a traditional ditty, a feel that will recur on "Fair Doreen." But it's the meditative, slightly melancholy "Beautiful and Light" that carries more power in its delicacy, as does the instrumental "Kinky Vans." And how can one not love the quasi-scientific romance of "Code Breaker"? "Surprise Me 44" closes the album carefully balancing the acoustic strumming with the electronic background. A sweet album that avoids becoming too twee.
