Sporting the name UB40, which stood for ‘Unemployment Benefit, Form 40’, often called an ‘Ubby,’ and was inspired by an assault on founding member Ali Campbell, who used the rather large settlement he received to fund the purchase of musical equipment, after which UB40 were on their wary … though not before entitling the album Signing Off, which was also a reference to the Unemployment Benefits Form, indicating that in order to receive benefits, the form needed to signed off [signing off], or approved by the signature of someone in a position of power.

Having an eight member band was rather staggering at any point in musical history, though especially in 1980, when bands where about being tight core elements, bare bones rock n’ roll essentials. Yet here, UB40 crowd the stage with a multi racial musically and lyrically tight band that incorporated a sophisticated combination of reggae, dub, synthesizer, psychedelic guitar reverb and brass instruments to not only define their sound to but to create a totally new infectious avenue of defiance without the low tech arrangements of punk.

Certainly UB40 could be convicted of various crimes against music over the years, though not here on Singing Off, which still manages to fly as signature collection of groove laden material that stands the test of time with such emotion and presentation regarding the working class [un-working class], love, passion, the struggle to survive, fairness, and social justice [injustice], that it’s still drawing in new fans today. What UB40 managed to do was to rally themselves and their fans against the establishment, and let their social and politically relevant messages resonated with elements of fun, which made their songs all that much more dangerous, as their lyrics and melodies were easily carried though the day, dancing in people’s heads as they went about their daily tasks.

This is not the heavy bottomed dub or reggae that so many know today, this was perhaps a take on folk inspired reggae formatted for the times, delivered with a bit more breezy attitude to inspire and reflect the nature of British society, culture and the economy of the day. That being said, the albums has been reissued with bonus material, though as with their other reissued outings, it’s the original album in all of its glory that is worth hearing, with the added tracks being more of an addendum, and easily left to the winds, though it is nice to emerge yourself in a bit more of what was going down during a seminal point in the history or British music.

I disagree that this was the only UB40 worth a listen, however it is the best of the bunch. A highly underrated group that gave so much back to Jamaica taking a lot less and giving a lot more than many from Jamaican songwriters and originators.
Whether you like the Lp or not Labour Of Love ploughed money back into the same Jamaican artistes once taken advantage of with one off writing fees and per recording/performance payments.

There is only one good UB40 album and this is it. All the soppy covers that followed this come nowhere near, not by a black country mile. I first heard this album at a girlfriends house and it was way outside the sort of thing I was listening to at the time (think long haired teenager, very early eighties, knew all the lyrics to ‘Suppers Ready’ by Genesis). To me it feels like they had one good album in them, the debut, the one all bands take a lifetime to write before it is committed to vinyl, from Tyler to Signing off it emits quality and reeks of authenticity (there’s the accompanying 12″ as well with ‘Madam Medusa’, ‘Strange Fruit’ and ‘Reefer Madness’).

I wouldn’t say that this album converted me in any major way, but it was part of a collection of different albums that opened my mind and ears to different types of music and made my listening much more eclectic.

Madam Medusa, Strange Fruit and Reefer Madness from the 12" single are not on the cassette album even though they are clearly listed on the label and insert?

I played my original Cassette yesterday just to make sure.

A5: Madam Medusa
B7: Strange Fruit
B8: Reefer Madness

Very nice early record from UB40 that is much closer to roots reggae / dub then pop and has thus stood the test of time. Very chill offering with great basslines and minimal dubbed out vocals. Not at all what you would expect from UB40 now or in the later 80's. Recommended.
