Vanessa Carlton from Pennsylvania already has a failed training as a ballet dancer behind it if they taken collapses on her old passion: music. She grew up in a musical family (mother was a piano teacher), where both Mozart as Pink Floyd was turned and soon developed a unique style in her youth, Vanessa, in which both influences are. With Be Not Nobody (2002) she delivers a remarkably mature debut off. The dreamy and sensual piano songs are reminiscent of Tori Amos and Kate Bush but above all has the early Carlton about a warm distinctive sound. Highlights include the strong single A Thousand Miles, Unsung and the beautiful Pretty Baby. The forced cover of Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones is a bit out of tune. But as the only cover the least song is, says much about the quality of the rest of the plate.
