Love this album as it exemplifies the depth of this mans creativity. Whether a contractual obligation or not it is unique and totally unexpected to the casual Vangelis listener whom expect melodic drenched movie music this is not of that DNA.
Here he explores I am surmising the sonic terrains of the Yamaha CS-80 a monster 150 lbs analog polyphonic synthesizer capable of immediate tactile to sound responses. The album has very little to no overdubbing a wonderful treat in itself!
Traversing dark and light terrains you get the bleeps and bloops the staccato too and at time's not too distant Forbidden Planet like sounds electronic curios from decades earlier.
I respect Vangelis totally going against the smooth veneer of his usual offerings and creating what I believe must have been a complete commercial failure of truly avant-garde expressionism. Not an easily listen but something that will catch you off guard in a positive way one day mark my word!

Some say he created this beast as he was contractually obliged to produce one more LP for RCA, but those who do generally do not appreciate the insanity that lies within.

After the inspiring Heaven & Hell, Albedo 0.39 and Spiral, fans were left in anticipation for what beauty Vangelis would conjure up next.

Instead, he delivered a piece which could only be described as chaotic.

While there are only two "parts" listed, there is far more than that present here. Indeed, hardly anything stays constant for more than 30 seconds (and if it does, you are left hanging in uneasy suspense).

Quite hilarious to hear of people pigeonholing Vangelis as "Easy Listening Electronica" or even "New Age" when you're exposed to this.

Make no mistake, this is NOT easy on the ears or mind. It's probably one of the only LPs I own that I will never listen to any which way but sober. My god, it would take some serious guts to sit down and listen to this on illegal substances.

I can't even describe it, other than what I said already:

Chaos.

This is a very interesting album if maybe a bit strange & bizarre to some Vangelis fans... "Beaubourg" is one of those albums where you either like it or you don't... it's been a topic talked about with many Vangelis fans... It's an album in my opinion that more or less showed Vangelis in a sort of freestyle mode... creating different sounds & effects while showing his ability at doing what he does so well... Yes fans you either like it or you don't but make no mistake it is nothing like his other albums but that's not necessarily a bad thing here... It's not a bad album! : )

I first heard an excerpt of this album on a 'Best of Vangelis' compilation. Beside the melodics and accessibility of sequencer driven tracks like 'Spiral' and 'Pulstar' this seemed at total odds. Nowadays respected artists hedge their bets when doing something a bit 'radical' by labelling it an 'installation piece' to hide any possible blushes. Not the big Greek! Vangelis never deliberately hid behind his tottering banks of analogue synthesizers in this way. Dark, brooding and not what most people wanted, you can actually hear the maestro himself churning the VCO/VCF knobs! A gem desparately in need of remastering though. Apparently a 'corrected mastertape' version was released by RCA, this and the Vinyl versions suffered from audible Master Tape 'drag'.
