"Skin on Skin" is a drastic departure from Vanity's 1984 LP, "Wild Animal": 'SoS' has a larger production budget, awesome studio musicians, slicker songs, with unabashed Billboard Top 40 aspirations. The cover photos are stunning---Vanity oozes 1940s silver screen femme fatale glamour---enough to make Lena Horne green with envy. Vanity's sex appeal alone is worth the price of the record!

'SoS' doesn't rely on the youthful sex energy, blazing synthesizers, and the screaming guitars "Wild Animal" did; the overall sound of 'SoS' is mild mid-80s dance funk. The standout single is "Under the Influence" which is Vanity's most successful solo single (Top 10 R and B and Top 10 Disco, circa 1986). "ManHunt" is a fun and salacious dance pop number; "Romantic Voyage" (the weakest track) is a lukewarm ballad fit to be a theme song for a 2nd rate cruise line. "Confidential" and "Ouch" are juicy slices of dance funk; "Animals" is laughably fun and sexy!

This record is perhaps the best Vanity musical product on the market. Vanity's voice is lithe; the song writing is clever and a wonderful match to Vanity's personality. However, the record is a rather lukewarm addition the mid 80s R&B, dance-funk pool (1986 was the year of Janet Jackson and Vanity's ex bf, Price, was still riding high), but there are standout singles that may have given Vanity more chart successes.

This record is a must-have for Vanity fans or anyone interested in the musical output of Prince's most infamous and sexiest spin off. CDs are almost impossible to find but cassettes are available.
