Bristols' ever fresh and inventive underground Drum & Bass and Jungle scene has produced many greats of the genre over the years, and Alex Eveson / Dead Mans Chest (DMC) should be considered alongside this elite group (although he is really from Glastonbury).

Initially a producer of the more liquid and intelligent styles of drum & bass, Alex had spent many years honing his craft with some exquisite productions on many notable labels including Shogun, Liquid V & V records. Eventually re imagining as DMC moving to Ingredients producing Jungle and taking things into new territory.

But I must state that I am ashamed to be so late to the Western Lore party after being slow on the uptake. Initially I was intrigued by the name Western Lore, and the stunning artwork that was popping up on social media along with the numerous plaudits and superlatives people were using to describe the impact and quality of material that has emanated from the inner sanctum of Bristols D&B scene.

The cover immediately strikes you, with its stark design, and psychedelic tones. Check the Slip Matts also, really nice. You feel like you are in for a treat and the LP delivers for me for many reasons.

There is a real mixture of styles and tones, but its also coherent, mature and well developed sound that is also very raw and exciting

There are many tracks that require a few listens to really peel back the layers, and click with the vibe, but after a few listens you are rewarded.

This is a deep and thought provoking journey through Jungle and Breakbeats. My personal favourites are Levitate, Smoke & Mirrors, Anima Morta & Vanishing Point, but the other tracks are also top notch.

The Digital / Cassette mixes Sides A & B feature many of the tracks on the LP along with some additional material not yet released or found on the previous 12" EP sampler.

Outstanding work across the board brought together by one of the most celebrated producers and label honcho Dead Mans Chest.
