Last one of the 30 4-CD box-sets Rumour released between late '98 and late 2001. This one came with a quite an amateur yet sweet and tempting to grab cover. Like most of these box sets each disc is mainly one artist with 8 aliases.

Disc 1 is (or rather was since I sold it long ago) my pick, with some nice downtempo with upbeat parts from the late Jake Stephenson. Disc 2 is from Organic Records. As usual this label had a very peculiar style; its tracks can’t stay downbeat for long; they are all quiet yet moving at the same time. Last track with its 17 minutes is quite a unique one though definitely nothing worth of buying this set for it alone.

Disc 3 is from Phil Merrall. The compositions, melodies and arrangements by this mysterious artist were quite amateurish so much that it seems the music was composed by a kid (sorry Phil) yet personally his music had something which kept me listening (happy now Phil?)

Last disc despite being from Matt Hillier is the worst. Most of it sounds it has been recorded on CD from a tape. Matt might be an amazing ambient master but most times he only passed to Rumour junk mainly in terms of sound – or maybe Rumour managed to ‘grab’ leftover, unfinished and un-mastered work, who knows. A good exception to this is his content on Chilled Trance - Blissed Out Beats / Mind Cooling Meltdowns, which despite mastering issues (as always anyway on these sets) there is some seriously good stuff in there.

I’ve seen this recently sold for over €30. I don’t know what made a particular buyer pay this amount, if it’s the cover or Matt’s input. If so re-think and listen before – sound quality on CD 4 puts Rumour to shame. The other discs have their moments but are nothing to scream about and pay unreasonable amounts for them.
