Welcome to 1997 in the Dance Years series. In 1997 I managed to persuade the bosses at BBC Radio 1 to give me a Sunday night show, the slot had traditionally performed really badly after the Top 40 Chart where the figures nosedived after the No. 1 record was played.

I came up with the idea of 'Dance Anthems' as a way of playing some great uplifting anthemic classic tunes alongside bringing in some of the biggest floorfillers of the moment. A lot of people thought it wouldn't work, "Why would people want dance music on a Sunday night?" I had a hunch it would, I think I rather bravely offered to do it for free if we didn't increase audience. Nothing prepared me for the response we got, by the second week the phone lines were jammed before the chart had even finished. Within a few weeks the volume of calls took out the BT number and crashed the whole system. Dance Anthems was born and a ten year session of Sunday night mayhem.

We also started the Radio 1 dance parties at various beach locations across the UK where guest DJs joined me for a sunset guest mix session. Musically trance was starting to come through and my DJ career was about to take another turn.
