What a remarkable and inventive concept! On a single disc you get well over 10 hours of music that ranges from professionally recorded music (e.g. Track 3 The Nightingales - Eleven Fingers) to amateur monophonic recordings. There are 205 recordings here with more available on 4 CD-Rs, originally available only at a series of concerts in Japan, but now included in some copies. My copy only has the DVD so I will be reviewing that alone.
What you get when you press "Play" is an extensive multi-page menu with links to nearly all of the acts featured so that you can select your favourite piece of music. The breadth of styles of music included here is wide (though not limitless) and you can hear Alternative Rock, Noise, Goth Rock, Lo-Fi, Punk, Avantgarde, New Wave, Techno, Free Improvisation, Ambient, Hardcore, Electro, Doom Metal and Industrial Music (probably not in that order).
It has taken me two months to listen through all of the music and though it is not my intention to give a blow-by-blow review, commenting on each piece of music, I think that I am now able to give a reasonable first impression.
The video element is a still image of text in English. The text contains slogans that chime with the underlying attitude of do-it-yourself music and, with the exception of the songs taken from the Caroline True Records catalogue, I believe all of the music is independent of the music business. This does mean that there is no meaningful visual element to the release but it also means that the music, compressed to some MPEG format, I believe, fits within around 1 gigabyte of data. You may as well play the disc in your DVD player and leave the screen switched off because slogans like "Break through in grey room" become very boring after around half an hour. In contrast, the menu pages (a page for each set of 10 tracks) are far more interesting visually. A shame that the compiler couldn't cycle the handful of photos as a slide show rather than back the music with white text on a black background. Obviously there were data overheads to work within that I don't understand but a blank screen would have been my preference.
As there are 205 tracks it would be impossible to structure the songs in any order like you would an album, but I do feel that grouping types of music together might have been worth considering because when played in order you get the impression that a flying elephant has just had unfortunate bowel movements. A case in point, Track 8 – Trilobite "Ako 「Birth」2001/12/1" is over 40 minutes long! A piece of this length is more likely to encourage the listener to get bored and turn the disc off rather than persevere. There are a few pieces of inordinate length - perhaps they should have been left for a dedicated section of this disc? Perhaps at the end?
Nowadays it is possible to enjoy music, no matter how well or badly recorded, and for the casual listener there are a lot of really good songs in here. For example, there is Track 139 – Odd Fellow - "Unity Song" which is a good pop song. I'm not sure we really need an inferior live recording of the same song as Track 152 but out of 205 songs I would estimate that a third of them are worth checking out. If I ever listen to this set again I might revise that figure up to a half but I wasn't keeping score when I listened to the pieces.
One production criticism I do have is that the longer pieces (including Track 8) have technical faults that could / should have been repaired before mastering. These faults include the sound of tape running out and, after a few seconds, the music continuing from where it had stopped. This could have been stitched together.
One band I decided I didn't like was Trilobite who feature a guitarist who obviously loves the sound of his own guitar. There is clearly a Krautrock influence here and the playing is good, but they have three tracks on the set, Tracks 8, 177 and 178 adding up to around 96 minutes! If, on the other hand, you find that you like Trilobite then this set is a must-have.
Pure Noise is a very expressionistic form of music. For me it requires a setting or a context, so Track 176 – United Statets Of America - "The Atomic Bomb & Black Radio Activity Rain" is the most successful of these pieces because it paints a simple picture effectively.
What is the difference between three exceptional musicians entering unexplored musical territory, and three inept amateurs bashing, honking and sawing away blindly at their instruments? Personally, I cannot distinguish one from the other so there is no way that I can really discuss the free-form material here.
My favourite track (outside the Caroline True selections) must be Track 140 – スズメバンド - "少年は鐘を鳴らす" Not the best recording, but it fits in best with my tastes. A good instrumental with progressive leanings. I should also mention Track 24 – Star27 - "Soldier On, Son" as this is my favourite band of the Caroline True acts.
The one track I wish I had never heard is Track 129 – X'ho - "Mr. Ant". It only serves to illustrate that what to some is waste, is to others, treasure. I can't help feeling that 40 billion flies can't all be wrong.
All in all, this is an admirable, brave, and inventive collection and as a window on independent music from the Far East (notably Japan) it is a delight. Congratulations to Shinobu Goto who had the vision to make this release, and the sheer will to see it released.
Recommended to music lovers who don't expect to like everything in a 10 hour compilation.

"There are over 201 tracks on Do The Independence, a five-disc indie music compilation. In fact, there are 263 songs making this almost an unreviewable album. You would have to go to several desert islands and back, to make sense of it all.

As a weird collector release, this box set was initially a ticket to a series of concerts in Japan late last year. Once you buy a ticket, you get the box plus the first disc. To complete the set of five discs, you had to attend the rest of the gigs.

The box set now comes with a silver disc DVD (which contains 203 songs but no video); four CD-Rs (TDK or Sony discs) of 60 tracks; and printed artwork."
