A surprisingly satisfying find for this fan of both exotica and electro; especially at clearance price, it was worth taking a chance-- and rewarded with an essential gem! Early edition with glow-in-the-dark inner tray, too!

The two different genres are practically worlds (generations) apart, but they collide and come together here nicely to the amazement of fanatics. If you're an exotica purist and Tiki culture enthusiast, I would understand not liking this collection. If you're an electronica and techno fan, you might wonder, "what the hell...?"
But like getting peanut butter on your chocolate, or chocolate in your jar of peanut butter, try it; you might like it!

The level of whether a remix stays true to the original in atmosphere, ambience, or mood, versus a complete reworking or different take than the original is inconsistent on this disc overall, but I'm not complaining about the selection of material (providing an adequate overview of well-known midcentury modern standards for just the first volume of the series) or the selections of remixers.

Jack Dangers as MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO is as usual inspired, articulating his signature muscular rhythmic knack for moving bodies out on the dance floor.

UBERZONE's remix of MARTIN DENNY's immortal classic had my mouth watering when I first spotted this in the store, at seven minutes (the longest track here) and complete with YMA SUMAC-like vocal samples, definitely did not disappoint. The addition of sax was one hurdle I quickly overcame, but I would've preferred maybe JULIUS WECHTER or HARVEY RAGSDALE marimba samples to add some extra exotica authenticity instead.

Other noteworthy standouts include RIP-OFF ARTISTS' treatment of DEAN MARTIN and JULIE LONDON's dreamy "Sway" [remix], although there's not enough of Julie's vocals here.
UTAH SAINTS' remix of a well-known classic that's been done to death, "Watermelon Man" by KING CURTIS, is a surprisingly fresh take.
Same goes for "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"-- simply outstanding fresh remix by GUSGUS!
I agree with the other reviewer here on the excellence of APRIL STEVENS' "Do it Again [WAGON CHRIST remix]" as treated by LUKE VIBERT-- play on "repeat" for sure!

I personally didn't like much of this album. Most of the tracks remixed here are a lot better in their original form (You can find much of these tracks on various CD's from the "Ultra-Lounge" serie on the Capitol label). My thumbs up would go to Wagon Christ and his remix of April Steven's "Do It Again". He keeps the old flavoured touch of the song and the whole thing sounds like a weird christmas track. Eat Static is doing well with "Caravan", adding a funky touch to the exotic feel of the original. Some moments with Gus Gus remixing Leroy Holmes and Omni Trio remixing John Barry, but nothing quite memorable. And don't expect much with the "James Bond Theme" re-re version: the melody is barely recognizable and, just like the moby version, it's just bad.

This is so much fun! It has absolutely NOTHING to do with electro nor lounge, but is full of joyful remixes of highly cinematic stuff like James Bond Theme, The Good Bad And The Ugly - yes, I know that sounds plain stupid – but if you like <B>The Rip-Off Artist</B> and Atom Heart in the role of <B>Eric Satin</B> you’ll be on the level for this one. List of contributors to this silly melody mix is truly impressive and the final result is something absolutely shaken (not stirred).
