Tremendous collection and thoughtfully presented book. Dust to Digital outdid themselves with this one. Truly a labor of love -
from the performances presented, to the field recorders, photographers, filmmakers, and researchers who captured them, to the amazing presentation and documentation contained in the collection -- the book itself only hints and the wonders inside.

The explanation and historical context of recordings presented in the text is illuminating. Consider, for example, the description of the Alan Lomax DVD, "Alan Lomax Goes North":

"Neither synchronized with sound nor edited into a finished document, his 1938 cinematographic efforts also lacked accompanying notes, in a sharp contrast to the 1936 footage, which was supplemented with a list of, "records that can be played as musical accompaniment," as well as as fifteen pages of "Descriptive notes pertaining to the Archives' Haitian film" (Averill 2011: CD5). Haphazardly indexed, eventually spliced willy-nilly onto a single reel with clips from his earlier fieldwork and that of other researchers in the American West, it languished in obscurity for decades.
In the late 1970s, thanks to Carolyn Lipson-Walker's American Folkloer Films and Videotapes: An Index, I happened on an entry for "The Archive of Folk Song: Being a Collection of Amateur Films Made by Alan Lomax and Others from 1936-1940" (1976: 291). ..."

These notes and references are detailed, thorough, interesting, and well-sourced. While all this material can be listened to and viewed without reading the or referencing the book, the whole package Dust To Digital has put together is a wonderful nexus and jumping off point for field recording and folk song enthusiasts of all interest levels.

Years of listening and learning are contained in this collection.
