If you're the kind of person who likes "all kinds of music...except country," this compilation might just make a country music fan out of ya, especially if you have some knowledge of postwar American cultural history.

Arranged more or less in chronological order and spanning the mid-'50s to the early '80s, this collection of hits reflects the times, drifting from innocent, lovelorn ballads to tales of cheating, seedy motels, drunken fights and divorce.

Henson Cargill's "Skip a Rope" gets right to the point, in case you didn't know the second half of the 1960s was a time of social upheaval: "Daddy hates Mommy, Mommy hates Dad; last night you should'a heard the fight they had; gave little sister another bad dream; she woke us all up with a terrible scream" ... this is right before it mentions racism and tax fraud.

Feminism appears in the form of the sexually forward lyrics of Billy Jo Spears' "Blanket on the Ground", as well as the lousy husband-scorning song "Nobody" by Sylvia and David Frizzell's "I'm Gonna Hire a Wino to Decorate Our Home" (although all three were penned by men).

And interspersed are a few songs that probably served more to distract from all the upsetting things going on.

It's really quite a collection, and interesting to see how high these tracks soared in both the country and pop charts. All of the songs are quite short, as well, so even if you don't like one, well, it's over soon enough.
