This excellent 4 CD set combines recordings made by Arhoolie founder, Chris Strachwitz, in the San Francisco Bay are between 1954 to 1971. Most of these cuts are previously unreleased or either released here first time on CD. Discs are housed in lavishly illustrated hardcover book. There's interesting liner notes, artist profiles, detailed recording and personnel information and comprehensive list of sources used. Amount of information is massive!

This compilation has an interesting setting of different kind of on it. The main focus is on blues (acoustic country blues and electric blues), but there's also folk, jazz, bluegrass cajun and even some rock numbers on this compilation. Sound quality of these recordings varies from poor to great. Earliest recordings presented on first CD are definitely worst sounding ones. Although these numbers are far form audiophile quality, they're definitely listenable. Rest of the material is much higher quality. Sound quality in most of these recordings is pretty much on par with official Arhoolie releases.
