This collection is notable for including the 9-minute extended version of Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird".

This was advertised on TV in 1974. I was 13 and living in the midwest and the album introduced me to some groups that I had never heard. Loved it and played them til I wore them out.

The mix of "Touch Me" by the Doors that is featured on this LP compilation set is AMAZING. The engineers really punched up the audio to give it more of a "power" feeling to it.

My comment would echo wubworld's - an amazing compilation. Got it when I was 12 years old, and was blown away by almost every track! Apparently they weren't too clearly defined on what 'heavy metal' was in 1974, although 'smoke on the water', 'iron man' and 'kick out the jams' were true seminal metal. Worth owning for "Freedom" by Jimi Hendrix alone. That album continues to make me smile 40 years on...

Although this collection is hardly Heavy Metal it is quite possibly the best collection of rock music from this period. Bought secondhand a couple of years after its release it has informed my musical experience throughout my life. Worth owning for the full version of the Buffalo Springfields Bluebird alone.
