Looking at the roster of acts on this comp, you'd expect it to be held in better regard (Photek and Source Direct under guise contribute 8 of the 12 tracks); this is a solid dnb compilation. Klute's entries are very good: "Workout" comes across as a nu-skool jazz effort featuring vibes and synthesized trumpet blasts, "F.P.O.P." has a driving rhythm and sparse accompaniment that turns simply sublime about 3 minutes in, and "Right Or Wrong" builds gracefully with a catchy vocal sample. Studio Pressure (Rupert Parkes aka Photek), of course, turns in some doozies. "Jump MK II" has a trademark Photek bass sound, "Relics" takes a spin into jazzy house, and "Presha III" gets all Metalheadz-ish. Plaid's remix of "Relics" actually improves on the original, bringing the melody up in the mix with their usual charming and looped harmonies. Sounds of Life show a feathery light touch on "A Spice of Jazz" and a rougher side on "Hidden Rooms" when they go decidedly up-tempo with more aggressive beats (but wisely don't dispense with melody as in much later work!). Wax Doctor's remix of "Release the Bells" tries to straddle the difficult line between airy and dark, and turns out well-enough but seems to be missing something.
