Symbiosis records show their humoristic side by this oddly packaged and titled release. Described by Symbiosis itself as “Psychedelic Breakbeat” in its flamboyant liner notes, this was one of the PsyBreaks releases I was missing. Compared to the rest of PsyBreaks oriented releases I have this compilation is most part Breakbeat with only 1 full track and half of another long track in 4/4.

After the introduction by Chris Morris the compilation starts with the only full 4/4 track, “It’s a Nappy”. This is a very bouncy track with odd psychedelic effects thrown randomly but effectively. Following is none-one less than Ciaran Walsh better known as Deviant Electronics. Not sure if the length of the track title was chosen to reflect the track length but this compilation is almost worth for this track alone, assuming PsyBreaks is your cup of tea. Half Breaks and half 4/4 this is easily the best track Ciaran has ever done. Forget for a while the hard stuff he released before on Helix Records, this track is a perfect psychedelic breakbeat monster and no second of it fails to grab your attention. This and the last 2 tracks are my favourites. “Dark Fader” is an almost Drum and Bass track with a robotic voice humming the title track occasionally. I love the deep bass this track has, try it loud. And then “Missed Cannon”, a very cool breakbeat track which could make the soundtrack of some Western movie ;)

For some reason this is the only Symbiosis CD which is abundantly available and humbly priced. Wondering why. The quirk cover hinting to anything but psychedelia ? Hardly. Was printed in more quantities? Who knows, but considering this is an elaborate digipak it would have cost. The style was not embraced and left many unsold copies ?! Hope not, though PsyBreaks didn’t make it past 1998.

All in all essential this is not, but if PsyBreaks you like then you should give this a try.
