An impressive and long-overdue re-release of this soundtrack to one of Michael Mann’s best films. The sound is generally rich and clear. There is a little surface noise from the attractive blue marble effect but it’s only really noticeable at the start of each side. The first disc comes in a card sleeve which will not do the vinyl any good, but it can be easily replaced with a more suitable one. While my copy was bought new, there a few scratch marks on the otherwise impressive sleeve artwork.

The version of ‘In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida’ is the same edit used on the original album release and is around 8 mins 20 seconds long. The sound quality is not so good on this track and Klaus Schulze’s ‘Freeze’, but I imagine that’s due to the way they were originally recorded.

It’s nice to have the two bonus tracks missing from the original release; ‘Hikari No Sono’ in particular is one of the highlights and accompanies a key scene in the film. The running order otherwise matches the original, which has nothing to do with the film itself and prioritises the songs over the instrumental tracks. This is a common problem with film soundtracks. Otherwise, I recommend this reissue for fans of the film and its music.

Update 8-28-18: Ok, after my initial glowing review I decided to go back and be more critical because I recently upgraded my speakers. As with all other Waxwork records, this one suffers from surface noise. Note: not pops or crackles but just surface noise. I don't believe this is because of the mix - the music sounds awesome. But there is that undercurrent of annoying surface noise, which my new speakers pick up much more than my old ones. It's noticeable between songs and during quiet parts. I do wish that Waxwork would release plain black vinyl releases for their records. As much as I like the colored vinyl sometimes, the bottom line is always how it sounds and their records are often noisy. For comparison, black vinyl, say Pink Floyd's reissue of The Division Bell, has no surface noise at all - just the music.

Dare I say near flawless release? I just listened to it and it sounds fantastic. They did a great job on the mix with this one, it sounds lush and cranking In-A Gadda Da Vida is a blast. I'm stoked that all the music from the film is here. This is such an underrated masterpiece of a film! Seriously, if you bought this without seeing the film...see the film!! I love the packaging as well. I would have loved an insert with more photos and liner notes, and of course a download card. Awesome job, Waxwork!
