I'm not too familiar with the Nuggets releases, so this is a nice intro for me. I really enjoy this CD, especially since I'm getting more into '60s pop. However, given its title and cover art, I was expecting it to be a bit more psychedelic, to be honest. Instead, although it does venture into psych territory a little bit, it's mainly a garage rock compilation.

Imagine a Venn diagram with two circles that half-overlap. The first circle is garage rock: the mostly American, slightly rougher version of the mid-'60s British "beat" music (unsophisticated, early Beatles-style, bang-it-out party music). The second circle is Anglo-American psychedelic rock: the 1965-1974 wave of relatively slow, monotonous, LSD-influenced ear candy with contemplative, poetic lyrics. This compilation is basically that first circle: garage rock, including its somewhat psychedelic side. It's all pretty accessible and not too weird, even the lesser-known stuff. Definitely a sausage fest, though.

The mastering is pretty good, though not ideal for me. It's very well-EQ'd, and they apparently did use original mono masters, which is good. Dynamic range is a bit weaker than I'd like, but this music isn't very dynamic to begin with, so I'm overlooking it this time.
