Right here is where you find all the songs from the Velvet’s albums that you actually want to hear.

Yes, I know that’s a pretty bold statement, but these songs are masterpieces, there’s not a number here that’s going to drive anyone from the room, there’s no “Black Angel’s Death Song,” no “European Son” or any of the other numbers one listens to mostly in the company of oneself. There are certainly some numbers that could have been included before considering the track “Heroin”, just consider my personal “Free Bird” “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’” (where if I may sidestep for a moment, is a number the Sand Pebbles simply blisters on their latest release), yet for the most part, this is a hands down righteous album that showcases the Velvet Underground without the pretenses, without the art-rock, and without a doubt allow you to feel that the Velvet Underground were actually far more commercial and radio friendly than they were.

“Sweet Jane,” is a superbly brilliant and guitar driven.  Lou’s voice spits out the words as if they were nothing more then the flick of a wrist.  At the time, the song was like nothing any of us had ever heard, you can actually feel in Lou’s voice and playing, a quiet smiling laugh, knowing that as the number plays out, he’s totally aware that he’s created a song that is just perfect.

“Oh! Sweet Nuthin” has to go down as the greatest rock song of all time.  It builds slowly in tenor, tempo and lyrics, musically, almost cinematically, building and building … come on let’s face it, this song is about sex, the act of making love, slow caresses, moans, sighs, longings, aching, nothing but two people together for the moment, in the moment, moving slowly, savoring the intensity, the feeling, pumping to its smooth understated guitar driven climax, intermixed with vibrating reverberating drums.  It’s in your head, it’s in your soul, it’s in your outstretched fingers longing for more.  Then finishes so quietly that you’re left wondering if it ever happened at all.

“Rock & Roll” is almost six minutes of hard driving fast talking jive, backed with a guitar solo that echoes in my head to this day.  The Velvets weren’t interested in the harmonies being smooth, it was all about the toughness of the dance.

As I said, there’s not a thing to complain about on this record, and as with all Velvet Underground material, if you’re not playing the vinyl, you’re missing half the fun. On the other hand, the tracks on 1969 are for the most part of good sound quality, resulting from four-track recording equipment being used. Some of the tracks feature light crackling, however, as they were sourced from acetates, the original tapes having been lost. The CD release is worse in this regard, as it appears that some tracks were sourced from a vinyl copy of the album. There is little ambiance or audience sound, however, because no audience mic was used and so the only ambience the listener gets is whatever little the vocal and drums mics picked up. This makes the record sound relatively flat and small and makes it seem that only a handful of people were present. And that is one of the reasons so many people are still looking for the early first pressing, rejecting the compact disc versions.

If you weren’t there during those days you can’t imagine the freedom and access we had to the performers, and coming from Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory, the Velvet Underground were used to being just people who played music, they didn’t see themselves as stars like musicians do today, they were very touchable.  The hardest part for me, being a woman, was that as time went on people though we were groupies, I was just into the music, and longed to understand form those who created.  So I was sincerely lucky in the early days.

It's probably one of the best live recordings ever pressed to wax. Songs like "Sweet Bonnie Brown/It's Just Too Much", "What Goes On", and "Beginning To See The Light" showcase a band at the top of their game. I think this is the best version of "White Light /White Heat" the band has ever recorded. I believe it's safe to say if you're going to have just one Velvet Underground album this might be the one; that's a strong statement for a live album, but it's that good.

First heard this on radio when released, couldn't believe what I heard at all (first V.U. I ever heard.) This is hands down the most played record by me ever. This is the most purchased ( I believe at least 9 times) record for me ever. My life was changed by this record. Thank you Paul Nelson, at whose insistence Mercury released this. In a life spent in music appreciation this stands out as number 1. ESSENTIAL !!!!!!

This album has become a definitive recording of the early 1970's. Not only because it represents what could be achieved with live recorded albums in terms of capturing the warmth, spirit, and immediacy of a good performance, but of the superlative Velvets material contained within it. It features sweetly beautiful moments in the ballads i.e. "Pale Blue Eyes' and a more terrifying kind of beauty within the cranked up dissonant skronk of 'What Goes On', 'Rock and Roll', and 'White Light Whit Heat'. The exultation achieved in some of the latter probably launched a million peak experiences and prompted several generations of musicians wanting to achieve the same effect within their own work. The fact that some of the tunes on this album originated from an audience recording gives those pieces a unique lo-fi charm, with the occasional obscure vocal only adding to such. Quite simply this is a classic record of classic post-John Cale performances captured not far off a year before Lou Reed walked out for good in August 1970. This album is worth procuring for experiencing the warmth in it, let alone for the magic encompassed in it, and not least the sublime version of 'Ocean', a true Velvets gem, which was never released during the Velvet Underground's short life between 1966 and 1970. Listening to this fine record again though it gains an added poignancy with the departure of Lou Reed from this mortal coil on October 27th, 2013.
