Both bands on this split play less-than-original, but stylistically immaculate, semi-raw black metal - not surprising given they come from a German BM scene with a plethora of good to great bands. I admit I'm a somewhat fanatical convert to this stuff, but from Ad Arma to Zorn, Deutsch black metal is a hell of a lot more than just Nargaroth (overrated) or Moonblood (*not* overrated!). As for Trollzorn and Vergeltung, any distinction between one's style and the other's is probably too small to be worth noting, as both of them resemble, on the surface, fairly standard second-wave black metal. Where they excel is not in innovation but execution, presenting a convincing sound with both evil, swirling tremolo-and-blast sections, and the ass-kicking midtempo parts in which German bands so often specialize. As a potential bonus, there's no obvious wannabe-Nazi posturing a la Absurd or Totenburg, and thus no reason to feel any pangs of guilt while listening. :-)
