“Untouchable” began life as a startling “130 war dub”, spontaneously exploding to life in the heat of creative battle between the various producers who make darker, rolling beats in & around the 130 bpm mark. But this war dub, with its warm disco loop intro and startling slams, stood out. Initially and for some time afterwards, curtailed at 90 seconds, it looked as though “Untouchable” was destined to be consigned to the “lost dubs” category, forever.
But Keysound label founder Blackdown intervened to fight for the track, and collaboratively helped extend the track’s arrangement into a second verse, the early Detroit techno-esque results of which are now heard after “Untouchable’s” midpoint breakdown.
The heart of the EP are two examples of Vern’s unique vision “Catch My Breath” and “Shokata”, as part much driven by the warmth and percussive genius of ‘90s/00s r&b production gods as current bassy club music. Deploying a deft stop-start sense of rhythm, they defy instant gratification or easy categorisation.
Finally “Yoshimitsu” sounds like it could have been built out of “Shokata’s” intro, yet heads off in a different, cinematic direction, one driven by overlapping arpeggio waves and ‘80s hardware jams. It sounds as if it’s both closing the EP and opening a film at the same time.
