I have been a fan of certain Sakamoto songs since the 80's. He hit things I can only discribe as future music. His catalog is staggering and all over the place but I have always enjoyed tracks from his early 80's period. That said, this VC album has channeled that era and vaporized it. And it is STUNNING. The use of traditional Japanese instruments mixed with modern midi mastery makes this an essential album for me. Tonite, make sushi with an android.

Pretty great music, but I can't help but feeling like some of this ersatz woodwind, general MIDI mallet fandango would have been better switched out for some 'real' instruments. Some of it is just a bit TOO plastic, which of course may arguably be the beating aesthetic heart of this record, but knowing how much Spencer Doran loves (and loves to ape) Italian Minimalism and Japanese proto-New Age, etc, this sounds very thin by comparison. To my ears the finely crafted arrangements displayed across Reassemblage sometimes deserve better treatment than they receive.
