On January 1st, 2001, the true first day of the new Millennium, Jean Michel Jarre and producer Tetsuya "TK" Komuro performed this concert in Okinawa. Rendez-vous in Space was a tribute to the science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke. Jarre visited Clarke in Sri Lanka and recorded him on video.

The recordings were used as an introduction to each track. Clarke could be seen on the big screen where he talked about the possibility of life on other planets and sex in a weightless state. All of the tracks were performed by The Vizitors - Jarre and TK.

The show's opening was based on the theme from Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey (Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra). Clarke acknowledged that he was inspired by Jarre’s music when writing the science fiction smash.
