I overheard Johnny explaining to someone how to play the maracas the way Bo Diddley had showed him at a gig in Detroit in the eighties, shortly afterward I invited him to the studio. He arrived with tenor and soprano saxophones and a Vajravarahi Thangka (the deity depicted with a vertically set third eye, drinking from a cup of blood and holding a knife) for inspiration and focus. I found the oceanic power of his saxophone remarkable and I delighted in his ability to make something beautiful by "spitting air through twisted metal."
