Thick jazzstep from one of its forefathers. Wax Doctor's compilation, SELECTED WORKS 94-96, gives a good, if too brief, overview of the man's career. But right from the funk bass of "Atmospheric Funk," which switches seamlessly from mysterious jazz to summer breeze, you can hear him firing on all cylinders. "All I Need" is more blissful, incorporating tiny vocal samples in the mix, while "Step" seems much more straightforward in its drum'n'bass. But "Spectrum" gets us back into the melodic side of things, and "Finer Things" revels in dreaminess, jazzed up with some piano chords, while "Heat" takes the same route, but with horns instead. "Kid Caprice" gets back to moody jazz, but "Offshore Drift" ends this album on more atmospheric note. Lovely. I only wish he had more works to collect.

Taken from the original sleeve:

This isn't just about history. It's not just one man, sorry, Doc's adventures beyond the valley of the breakbeat. Though tracing the evolution of Paul Saunder's soundleaves the perfect map of jungle as it spins off into the 21st century. Yes, this is the Selected Works. A brief stroll through jazz-flecked smoke-singed monsters like "Atmospheric Funk" and "Kid Caprice (Remix)". A robust shake-down of raw, minimalistic drum attacks like "The Step", the force of the funky atomised drum break pushing the science of technology to its limits. a sublime drift afloat on oceans of deep blue soul like "All I Need" and "Heat". This is about infinity, the great unknown, a place we've barely begun to dream of. A sound that's only just started to be defined. A sci-fi code cracking under the pressure of emotions so powerful, it's all you can do to lie back and think of the future. This is unique. Explosive. It's always on step in front. Time to catch up. (Calvin Bush. 1998)
