This album has been a real grower for me over the years. When I bought it around 2005 I didn't really like any of the tracks apart from Intensify (Part 1) and promptly shelved it. These days it's one of my favourite albums. You might think this is fairly typical early-'00s trancey-housey progressive material, but what has always set Way Out West apart is the intricacy and detail of their production and their willingness to play with structure and development. They're one of the few club producers who will write a great hook or section and not loop it out to oblivion. All of these tracks unfold unusually and interestingly, with an absence of DJ friendly intro and outros and a remarkable tendency to get to the point, and then to move onto another point. Their hip-hop background shows in the wealth of wonderful samples that are seamlessly embedded into the mix, creating a rich sonic landscape that is by turns autumnal, melancholic, summery, exotic and dark. In the loop-dominated world of dance music, it's extremely rare to hear those special one-off moments - "Greatest Bits" as my friend calls him - that keep you rewinding over and over again. Intensify is full of them - witness the gorgeously spacey descending melody halfway through The Fall or the heart-melting breakbeat denouement to Hypnotise.

I could live without the self-consciously "grown up" moments of syrrupy trip-hop such as Stealth or Mindcircus, but such tracks were almost inevitable on any millenial dance record, and these tracks are passable in their own right, and well integrated into the uptempo fare. Altogether, this is not only one of the very few records to pull-off progressive house in an album context, but one of my all-time favourites, an album I come back to over and over and always reveal something new.
