Does anyone know where the piano sample is from? I remember it from a tune earlier in my rave days way before The Gift came out.

This is the track that brought Way Out West fame, and no wonder: it's a stunner. With a sample of Joanna Law singing the famous Robert Flack tune "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," Way Out West craft an emotive piece of songcraft that's equally suited for the dancefloor as well as for simply watching the moon and the stars hand-in-hand with your lover. The "Club Mix" emphasizes the beats a bit more, bringing in a four-on-the-floor to accompany the breaks, but the original still rings out crystal clear in its clarity and beauty.

A story I once heard (or read) about this tune, or more importantly Nick Warren. He was refused a mortgage by the same Building Society that was using 'The Gift' to promote/advertise themselves, on TV at the time.

The original version is one of the best breakbeat trancey records ever made. Starts off with a wicked break, very simple but perfect. In comes the bassline and it just builds from there into an amazing euphoric wall of sound, piano stabs, small snippits of vocal, and lots more. The break is possibly the best bit with that amazing vocal "the moon and the stars, were the gifts you gave". The track just gets better as it plays, building into a fantastic sound, with plenty of variation in the patterns. Production is awesome, I will never tire of this tune.

One of those records that I fell in love with the first time I heard it, and have never got tired of hearing. A beautiful groove, echoey piano stabs and the vocal sample breaking through at exactly the right moment - a true classic in my book. Bizarrely, now in its fourth year of service as background music on the BBC kids' consumer advice show "Short Change". Obviously someone in the department is trying to give the kids a bit of musical education into the bargain - I approve!

This record utilizes a sample of UK nu soul artist Joanna Law's cover of the classic Roberta Flack song "The first time ever I saw your face"
