I’ve loved this album ever since hearing it played over speakers at Northern Lights Records in 1986. Winston Tong is a true tortured genius, sexy and dangerous, reminiscent of Antonin Artaud on theatrics and Arthur Rimbaud for his lyrics. As a young man he won an Obie Award as a puppeteer before hooking up with post punk/art rock Tuxedomoon on their best albums. This intoxicating synth pop, gothic masterpiece has many of his greatest songs including “No Regrets”, “Big Brother”, “Theoretical China”, and the propulsive, danceable “The Principles of Movement”. The all star backing band includes Stephen Morris of New Order, Alan Rankine from The Associates and Jah Wobble on bass at his melodic, magisterial best. This is a flat out masterpiece, essential listening.
