Picture on the front is of the Olde Brighton Rock & Candy Shoppe which was situated at the front end of the West Pier.

Way back in the very early '70s I went on the pier. It was Grade 1 listed and a magnificent specimen. Shortly after that it was damaged, I think a barge ran into it one night. After that it was closed permanently and gradually fell into ruin.

The Grade 1 preservation order meant it couldn't be demolished and, although there was a society set up to restore it, it never happened. This is par for the course in Brighton where people are very good at doing nothing for decades on end.

Eventually in 2002 part of it collapsed in a storm and then the following year it was set on fire by persons unknown and the thing became unsalvageable. I heard about it on local radio that very morning and ran down from my flat, which was nearby, to witness the death throes of the only Grade 1 listed pier in Britain.

All this is gone now including the rock and candy shop, which did remain well into the late 90s or early 2000s.
Now Brighton enjoys the i360 .... for ~£15 you can ride up a massive pole in a capsule and gaze down on what was once a great little town but is now a horrible city full of smug Londoners and their charming children. It is also home to the greatest housing bubble in Southern England. Yippee.

Wreckless lived in Brighton for some time in the 80s/ 90s/2000s (he was born just down the road in Newhaven). I used to go round his gaff for cups of tea, a chat and a bit of light mixing-desk-bothering. Like me Eric eventually grew tired of the place and relocated - he ended up in the US whilst I now inhabit one of the outer moons of Saturn.
