The Xaver Fischer Trio's VISIT FROM A GODDESS starts off on a blessed note, indeed: "Marchenwald" has a lovely dreaminess to it -- it's as if acid jazz met downtempo head-on. And the Brazilian influence on "Bahia" might be slight, but the warmth seeps through nonetheless, here and on "Cocktail Boogie." The vocals on "Better Times," unfortunately, are somewhat soporific, but "Always on My Mind," even with its cheesiness, still manages to eke out a smile. The quick "Tumbao" steps into place and dances on the moonlight, while "Mombasa Bossa" rides on its bass. The last track, "Better Times 1925" is a crackly homage to Jelly Roll Morton, and it's that visit that really makes the album stand out.
