Yello - Stella This is a crystal-clear vinyl pressing. That pristine Yello production shines through with all the punch and clarity as one would hope. Heard Stella for the first time as a teenager, back in the early nineties, on a cassette tape and it is still as ahead of its time now as it was then, perhaps even more so now that one gets to appreciate it from a different point of view with all the past decades of music behind. A brilliant record.

Like some people, I've known Yello thanks to their hit "Oh Yeah" in Gran Turismo 4. Therefore it's rather associated with unhappy moments since this song is played when you failed during the driving license process.

I've never liked this track that much, though I was looking for an original album from 1985. And I'm not disappointed.
I love the tribal sonic of "Desert Inn", I love the trippy ambient of "Ciel Ouvert" and I mostly adore the funky rhythm of "Angel No", definitely my favorite from "Stella". And the other ones are also very good. I even find the "Indian Summer" version of "Oh Yeah" better than the original, yet it's just a personal opinion.

Definitely some nice electronic & synthpop stuff from the 80s, as well as a cool alternative to Depeche Mode and New Order.

Yello "Stella"? Oh, just one of the best, weirdest, most innovative and idiosyncratic albums of the 1980s (or any other decade!), that's all. And this is a very good reissue.

outstanding concept album with catchy synthpop tracks and deep dark ambient taking one into a modern interpretation of a fim noir

This is an example of how Yello did some underground sounds that became mainstream with their mega-secret influence on other people.
This band is a mix of pure insolent snobism and classy avant-gardism. Their purposes deal with anarchist pop delirium attempts.
"Let me cry" sounds like Young Gods "Only heaven" and "Skinflowers" or like Skinny Puppy's "Hospital waste"
"Domingo" announces his future (involuntary) rip-off "Broken" by Nine Inch Nails (excessive guitar / synth layers). All theses artists never quoted Yello's influence, but it can be !
"Oh yeah" is a precursor of powerful dance as well as Mr Oizo's records
"Desert inn" is a funky electronic rock song that can be linked with Michael Jackson as well as Cabaret Voltaire material.
"Angel no" is an excellent song, but the voice is awful. This is an excellent record, and with excellent hits as Desire and Vicious Games !

And just to add on to the two previous reviewers, I also feel Yello have always created a unique vision not only in musical craftsmanship, but in lyrics too. Their stories are hilarious, outrageous, dark or just plain silly and playful, intertwined with the music to create a self-contained, complete experience.

Ditto previous reviewer...

Came back this album, after 20 odd years; replacing 'lost music'.
Should I revisit this album?
Hell Yeah (Oh Yeah!!)
It's 80s electronica, surely it will have dated badly??
Hell No!!
Sounds as good as did all those years ago, totally fresh.
Could be a manual for creating modern dance music, expecpt that there's about a 1000 times more crammed into it
Yello pre-empted the 'dance music' explosion of the late 80s, and rightly got the recognition and rewards they were undoubtedly due when the 'boom' arrived.
A tremendous record....

I gave Yello's "One Second" a stellar review, and very deservedly so, and "Stella" is very good too - but not quite as stellar as "One Second". This album is twenty times better than all of the schwag techno I've heard in the last five years, but "One Second" is better. Not a whole lot better, but a bit better. "Stella" is still an excellent piece of work. Considering that "One Second" had two additional years for the boys to work on their chops, this is still an excellent album that matches superior innovation with finely honed musicianship. Let's face it, these guys were way ahead of their time! They were doing things that are just now being tried by todays "pretend" producers. And the real problem here is that most people only know "Oh Yeah" because it was in Ferris Bueller's Day Off - and there's so much more to this band than that! They were excellent musicians and producers beside that one hit (that incidently made them rich!). Check out these two albums! You will hear innovators who were light years ahead of the curve. And you won't be disappointed unless your a total cynic who refuses to hear real innovation. There's plenty of those people out there!
