What to Know About the Upcoming Changes to Release Pages on Discogs

One of Discogs’s prevailing values is continual improvement, and sometimes that means implementing changes to the site that aren’t flashy. One of our current projects focuses on fine-tuning release pages, which account for 25% of all visits to the Discogs site. Right now, these improvements have only been enabled on release pages accessed by “logged-out users” (AKA people who don’t have a Discogs account or regular Discogs users who aren’t currently signed into their account). However, logged-in users will see the improvements this summer.

These changes include a complete overhaul of the release page code, which translates to better tech on the back-end and newer code on the front-end. The results? Considerably faster loading times and an easier-to-modify base will allow us to work on future design and user experience upgrades efficiently.

That said, while the new release page’s look is nearly identical to the current release page, we implemented a few minor adjustments:

  • Reviews: You can read all reviews and replies to reviews on the release page.
  • Tracklists: Releases with very long tracklists have paginated tracklists.
  • Responsive web design: Release pages render well on a variety of devices rather than having a separate, outdated mobile layout.
  • Localization: More content on the new release page is translatable.
  • Accessibility: The new release page works better with screen readers.
  • Social media: Releases shared on social media load with a more detailed image preview.
  • SEO: Minor SEO (search engine optimization) updates lead to improve searchability. Translation: People searching for the releases on Google will be able to find the pages more easily.

We’ve been very fortunate to have an enthusiastic group of Discogs users help us beta test the product. You can view the ongoing beta-testing discussion and learn more about the project in the Forum. A big thank you to our fantastic Community that is always willing to help us create a better platform! Keep an eye out for future surveys and forum threads, as we’re always interested in gathering feedback from the Discogs Community.
