Modern Talking

Profile:
Modern Talking, consisting of producer / songwriter Dieter Bohlen and vocalist Thomas Anders, was formed in 1984 in Berlin by Hansa label. The studio line-up also included Luis Rodriguez, Ralf Stemmann, Rolf Köhler, Michael Scholz, Detlef Wiedeke and Birger Corleis.

Their debut single "You're My Heart, You're My Soul" reached the top of the German pop charts and was No.1 for 6 weeks. After their incredible success in Germany, Modern Talking released their hit-single in Europe, Japan and the USA. They landed on top of the charts in 17 countries, including Japan’s top 15, being the first German act ever to enter Japanese chart. The single was also No.1 in Israel and Tu rkey, No.2 in South Africa, No.56 in the UK.

Modern Talking's debut LP, succinctly titled "The First Album", followed on the heels of their second single, "You Can Win If You Want," which confirmed their success being No.1 all over Europe (also No.1 in Israel and Turkey, No.10 in South Africa, but only No.70 in the UK). The first album achieved the platinum status in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and gold in Belgium, Finland, Israel, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Chile, Norway, Sweden.

The duo's sophomore effort, Let's Talk About Love, appeared in late 1985, launching the No.1 European smash "Cheri Cheri Lady" (also No.1 in Israel, Turkey and Hong Kong, No.13 in South Africa and No.44 in Japan). The second album reached the platinum status in Germany, Austria; and gold in Switzerland, Chile, Norway, Hong Kong.

With 1986's Ready for Romance (platinum in Germany, South Africa, Chile, Spain and gold in Argentina, Austria, Hong Kong), Modern Talking scored their biggest hit with "Brother Louie" (No.1 in Europe, Turkey, Israel, Hong Kong and South Africa, No.2 in Ireland, No.4 in the UK, No.15 in Mexico, No.34 in Canada). Another No.1 European hit "Atlantis Is Calling" followed very soon (also No.1 in Israel and Turkey, No.3 in Hong Kong, No.12 in South Africa, No.55 in the UK). Scoring gold with "Brother Louie" in Canada, Mexico and England, Modern Talking seemed to have the US market wide open to them.

However, after 1986's In the Middle of Nowhere (platinum in Chile, Spain and gold in Germany, Austria, Hong Kong) with hit-singles "Geronimo's Cadillac" (Top-10 in Europe, No.1 in Hong Kong and Turkey, No.2 in Israel, No.4 in South Africa, No.25 in Egypt) and "Give Me Peace On Earth" (No.7 in Belgium, No.28 in Austria, No.29 in Germany) tensions between Bohlen and Anders reached their boiling point, and following the release of their fifth LP, Romantic Warriors, Bohlen assembled a new project, Blue System. The final Modern Talking album, In the Garden of Venus, appeared posthumously at the end of 1987, after which Anders mounted a solo career.

In 1998 Bohlen and Anders reunited for a new Modern Talking album "Back For good" featured raps by Eric Singleton. The world witnessed the most successful comeback ever: their first performance was in front of an 18 million TV audience. The album was a huge success achieving triple platinum in Sweden; double platinum in Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Malaysia, Singapore, Chile, Argentina; platinum in Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Poland, Spain and gold in Netherlands, Greece.

Modern Talking is considered as the most successful German band ever and with over 120 million albums sold in the top 30 worldwide. Only mega stars like ABBA, Elvis, the Rolling Stones or the Beatles outrank Modern Talking internationally.

EVERY russian household had MT's records back in 1986/88. Slightly altered versions of their 2nd and 3rd album were released by state-running Melodiya label. That was giant leap of Glasnost and Perestroika that the modern western pop come to communist state. Millions were pressed, because everybody wanted to buy those records. I presume that no less than 50.000.000 of their albums were sold in USSR alone.

Here's a proof of the Modern Talking sucess: Everybody knows that the so-called underground rebels or intelectuals don't like Modern Talking style of music, correct? And every body knows the latin sentence "In Vino Veritas", right? So, what you think about this: in many diferent partys (from Rockabilly to 80's, or from Heavy Metal to Post-Punk, 90's or House music),after everybody's happy and well drinked, if the DJ plays "You're may heart, you're my soul", everybody sing loud! Everybody knows the lirycs! And the better part: after that, everybody asks for more Hits like that one, and nobody cares anymore for Cramps; metallica; David Bowie; etc??? What that means about colective memory??...It's a really strong punch in every people stomach who thinks this kind of Music don't have enough human quality. Modern Talking got that special thing that makes ART dificult to explain, but great to feel ;-)

In Portugal, all the 80's generation (people between 40 and 50 years old, in 2013) knows who Modern Talking are. Even the fans of Metal; progressive; Folk; etc knows the hit "You're my heart, you're my soul". So, if they know, all the rest of normal people remember to sing and dance that track. They had a special magic for such a catch balanced songs. I'm writting this, and I'm a DJ and a huge vinyl collector, from psych, underground, Hard rock to Free jazz and contemporary. Every kind of music got its own place: to 80's/ Euro Disco Modern Talking are KINGS!!

I had the opportunity of purchasing my first 7" at the time these guys released "You can win if you want". They were my favourite group at a stage. They were also featured on a lot of South African compilation releases, proving just how obviously popular they were. Years had gone by and the "Back For Good" album set the stage for other artists like CC Catch, Fancy & others to rehash their work. As a DJ playing to audiences with patrons having varied preferences, they have been the most popular with their hits remixed. Even with Dieter Bohlen's work under the guise of Blue System, their popularity was in one word still HUGE!

Modern Talking might not get much respect, but from what I can tell there are a lot more fans out there that would casually admit it. For me the Back For Good album was a gateway drug to the incredible world of 80s euro pop and, more importantly, Italo Disco. Their "comeback" albums were kind of short on ideas (several tracks were very obvious rewrites of hits of the previous year) but their first six, from their 1985-1987 heyday, are minor masterpieces, at least on a par with more respected European artists of the time, such as Silent Circle and Fancy and, despite public opinion, prove Dieter Bohlen to be the equal of producers and writers like Michael Cretu or (the equally maligned) Pete Waterman.
