I put my hands on the entire Yam-Yam series buying the records on the Web directly from the Schildger brothers and I must say that the relatively low rates of many of these releases are not totally fair. Yes, the project seems too much DJ oriented now and then and I noticed that the tracks are oftenly too short (4 tracks ep's would have been a better choice), but it must be said that the artist does a good job with the language of house music. What we have here is a clean minimal house sound reminiscent of Mark Broom's Pure Plastic era. The word 'clean' means to me a sonic soundscape where each pattern remains clearly distinguished (no distortions neither the dominance of a single loop) and my general impression is that Matt Star has got class. He knows how to build up a House track without stressing your ear with futile crescendoes and maintaining always a radical approach: few sounds but designed and assembled with quality. What is lacking in my opinion is a bit more of courage; for instance adding some real vocals to make the tunes deeper or making an harder work over the structure of the the melodic parts. The melodic add-ons that Matthias did on Yam-Yam productions are brilliant, but they should sound more complex to make the tracks really memorable: Matthew Herbert's standard seems to be affordable for him, so why not accept this challenge ? Anyway I hope that the guy won't give up to his Yam-Yam label :)
