Introducing Danny Howells
Original: http://www.dannyhowells.com/profile/

There are very few DJs who stand out in the world of dance music today, but Danny Howells is without doubt one of them. From his early years of DJing at Bedrock nights in his home town of Hastings, to the 10+ hour sets in New York today, one thing remains the same - a complete love of all music. It's this passion and plenty of hard work that has helped Danny to get where he is today. It's no coincidence that he's been placed in DJ Magazine's top 20 DJs in the world for the last 3 years. Danny has a unique, eclectic sound which as been described as "deepsexyfuturistictechfunkhouse" and it's this sound which which is shaking floors worldwide.

With over 12 years of experience, Danny has become truly international. His hectic schedule regularly takes him all over Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia. He's DJed in the world's coolest clubs and held residencies at Renaissance, Twilo and Home. With 2002 came the announcement of an exciting monthly residency at Vinyl in New York, where Danny's 10 hour marathon sets are fast becoming legendary.

It's not just in the club where Danny has made a name for himself, he's also been busy in the studio. Albums for Global Underground, Renaissance and his own Nocturnal Frequencies series have been the highlights in a continually growing back catalogue of acclaimed mixes. As a producer his main focus is with co-producer Dick Trevor and vocalist Erire as "Science Dept.". Last year they released the highly successful single "Breathe" and fans can expect more to follow in 2002.

Danny's infectious personality and individual style is what really puts him a cut above the rest though. You can really sense his connection with the crowd wherever he plays, and he has fully earned the label "the clubbers DJ".

doneadisco there is no better place to see Dannys skills come unto their own than when seeing him live... It's here where he get's truly deep. I still remember some guy in Auckland, NZ telling me about this new up and comer back in 2002 at a night called 2 Tribes. He gave a master-class and bowled me off my feet. I still have good memories of him doing the mimed walk down the staircase dissapering act behind the decks... I saw him last week and nothing's changed. He still has a heap of fun behind the badboi's!!

His Essential Mix debuted way before 2007 – check out his first Essential mix back in January 1998, this guy is pure class :) I still listen to that set regularly; it completely changed my musical direction!

I also find it amusing how Tong introduces him as a new comer, with no idea how far he would go - completely took the scene by storm.

I have just realised that I have never even seen him DJ in a club, i am shocked and ashamed and will rectify that this year!

Danny Howells is the DJ's DJ. King of the long mix, King of the re-edit, King of progression in his live sets. Ever since I saw Danny live back in 2004, the standard that I hold other professional dj's to has been raised. This guy is the most confident mixer I've ever seen. Dancing around in the booth, waving his headphone, throwing records like its nothing. When you're listening to a set of his its very difficult to distinguish when one track begins and the other ends. I honestly dont know how he does it, but I think his personal edits help a great deal. When he edits a track he extends the intro and outro so that they loop for a very long duration, thus giving him the ability to sneak the incoming elements in on you very slowly.

As far as progression in his sets, I've seen him open a room live for 1-2 hours with the bass completely CUT. Just mixing the mids and the highs with some soft music to get everyone swaying. Slowly he creeps in the bass, a little more with each passing track until the room is about to explode. I've never seen a dj with this much self control and consideration for building a night. Most other dj's will start pounding away as soon as they get on the decks.

I dont know about you guys but I've been worshipping the guy since his Essential Mix debuted on Radio 1 back in February of 2007. Its a 2 hour journey through some of the most beautifully mixed house music I've ever heard. Perfect haromnic mixing, layered vocal effects, and very often running 3 tracks together at the same time. Its not even apparent that the other 2 tracks are in there until you take a look at the track listing later on and try to identify where one starts the other one ends. Good luck with that!

In conclusion, Danny Howells is the best goddam dj on the planet. I can't wait to see him again.

Update: Finally got to meet Danny at Output in Brooklyn on 12-15-2013. One of life's great moments. Thank you for everything Danny!
