I have complicated feelings about Teenage Fanclub now that Gerard is out. I saw them last night in Portland, Oregon, and it was great...but. It's very odd that they now can't play 35% of their greatest songs. And the vocal harmonies, while decent, weren't quite right. Pre-2019 TFC was always a really nicely blended ratio of Blake, Love, and McGinley songs and voices. They each have different strengths both melodically and lyrically. A live set of 50/50 Blake and McGinley songs is a very different creature, leading to something altogether more grounded sounding and straightforward than TFC was before, which is largely due to the more emphasized presence of Raymond's songs.

Considering that the group's bestselling albums were reissued in 2018, and that it's doubtful anything they've made in recent years has sold in any substantial volume, touring almost certainly remains the way that Blake and McGinley make a living. So is it any wonder that, in light of Love not wanting to tour in the wake of these high-profile reissues, Norman and Raymond stay the course without him? I cannot fault them for continuing. This is how they have lived their entire adult lives, the career they've chosen as artists. The music industry doesn't exactly have a financial safety net. Perhaps Gerard can afford to go without touring, it's a shame that he opted out if Norman and Ray couldn't afford to. Bands are such complicated relationships of needs and priorities, it's never as easy as a simple shared artistic creativity.

And so, last night's live show was bittersweet: still fantastic, still worthwhile. But it's definitely a different expression of Teenage Fanclub, and I miss Gerard's songs hugely. And the idea that they are a tight-knit group of friends.

The lyrical content in their newest (and fairly bleak) single, "Everything's Falling Apart", which, on the surface, is about cherishing what you have while the whole world crumbles around you. I'm not sure whether Raymond was thinking about Brexit, or the climate change, or Teenage Fanclub itself.
