The Hollies

Profile:
The Hollies are an English pop group formed in Manchester in the early 1960s. Most of the band members are from throughout East Lancashire. Known for their distinctive vocal harmony style, they became one of the leading British groups of the 1960s and early-1970s. They enjoyed considerable popularity in many countries, although they did not achieve major US chart success until 1966. Along with the Rolling Stones, they are one of the few British pop groups of the early 1960s that have never officially broken up and that continue to record and perform. The Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

In the ‘60s, The Hollies had a journey strikingly similar to that of The Beatles, evolving swiftly from a rough-and-tumble, R&B-influenced crew to purveyors of sophisticated pop and, by decade's end, swirling psychedelic sojourns. They then managed the tricky task of extending both their popularity and musical growth into the ‘70s, scoring big with soulful ballads as well as some returns to their rocking roots. But wherever they wandered stylistically, their twin trademarks were glowing three-part harmonies and razor-sharp songwriting. Breezy pop hits and harmony-drenched epics provide just the beginning of The Hollies' story. Check out the bass throb, phased vocals, and trippy feel of “Transatlantic Westbound Jet,” their cantering take on Dylan's “When the Ship Comes In,” or the majestic “Too Young to Be Married,” a beguiling tale of love against the odds set to fluttering Spanish guitar and a surge of massed vocals on the towering chorus. There's a sense of adventure, a love of harmony, and even a little eccentricity hiding in The Hollies' catalog. Compare the head-shaking British Invasion pop of “Like Every Time Before” with the psych-tinged feel and undulating melody of “All the World Is Love,” the shivering strings behind the honeyed vocals of “Would You Believe,” and Peter Sellers adding some spoken-word shenanigans to the loopy “After the Fox.”
